About Us

My name is Ken Leaman and I have been practicing veterinary medicine in Western Washington since 1979. After my first job on the coast in Pacific County, we (my wife, Nan, and 2 young daughters at the time) opened our first practice, Leaman Veterinary Clinic, in the Stillaguamish Valley between Oso and Darrington, in 1981. It was a mixed large and small animal practice serving North East Snohomish County and South East Skagit County. We moved into an older home and remodeled an old dairy barn on the property into the clinic.

Our very first night in the house (electricity hadn't been turned on yet), just as we were falling asleep we noticed a flashlight bouncing around in the yard. "What's that?" A pounding on the door. "Yes?" "I'm a deputy sheriff. You the vet? I heard one was moving up here. A horse on a high hunt lost his footing, fell quite a ways and they're on their way here - get ready."

We weren't really ready to open but I had the necessary penicillin, ointments, cloth diapers and ace bandages. The horse lived and we went on to have a wonderful 11 years in the valley; but as our family grew with the addition of 2 more daughters we made the decision to relocate to Coupeville.

Leaman Veterinary Clinic became Penn Cove Veterinary Clinic and we opened our doors to this wonderful community in 1992.

Penn Cove Veterinary Clinic is a beautiful small animal clinic with 3 more wonderful veterinarians: Dr. Lark Gustafson, and Dr. Karen Schmid. We have a very competent and friendly staff. We listen to your concerns and we strive to help your pets. We are very good at solving problems. When you and your pets need help beyond our scope we have strong ongoing relationships with specialty clinics in the greater Puget Sound region that we work with on a regular basis.
